She was helping to clean out the old warehouse in her neighborhood. They were going to fix it up so the children who lived there could have a place to come to after school and on the weekends.

With a broom in her hand, she was sweeping real hard in an attempt to brush away as much dirt and dust as she could. She wore a mask and goggles to prevent any dust from getting in where she did not want it to get in.

“This is fun,” she said to the woman next to her.

“You all will finally have a place to play and study. No more tossing a ball around in the streets.”

“How long has this warehouse been here?”

“It’s old. For fifteen years–as old as you. My father used to work here until the owner lost all his money, but I’m sure you don’t want to hear about that.”

“No,” she said, as she laughed. “When will they come to move these old crates?” she asked, as she banged on one.

“Tomorrow.”

“What’s this?” she asked, resting down her broom.

“What?”

“This,” she said, as she reached and pulled out something.

  2. Great start! I would make the warehouse older. Fifty years old gives more of a cobweb feel.

    I want to read more!

  3. I chose fifteen because I wanted it to match up with her age.

But fifty can take on a new story of its own. Maybe a tale in black and white where she does find an old notebook, and in it is a secret that others want to know, and will do anything to have. :)

  5. That’ll be great. I can’t understand the reason why not. Maybe it’s not a way for them to make money, but maybe I’m being cynical.

We don’t have a homeless shelter, never have. The government is doing their part, some will say not enough.
